Know What You’re Dealing With Water damage can be caused by three different types of water, including:

• Clean water (Cat I)
• Gray water (Cat 2) 
• Black water (Cat3) 

It’s important to understand the differences because Category 2 and Category 3 water present health risks to your family or employees and need to be handled differently. The most likely sources of clean water would be water from a pipe, water heater, or steam lines. The basic rule of thumb is that it should look and smell like tap water.

However, Category 2 Water - Refers to a source of water that contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants and causes discomfort or sickness when consumed or even exposed to, this is known as "grey water". Examples are toilet bowls, sump pump failures, water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.

Then we have Category 3 Water - Known as "black water" and is grossly unsanitary. This water contains unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria and fungi, causing severe discomfort or sickness. This category includes water sources from sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, ground surface water or standing water. Category 2 Water or Grey Water that is not promptly removed from the structure and or have remained stagnant may be re classified as Category 3 Water. A toilet back flow that originates from beyond the toilet trap is considered black water contamination regardless of visible content or color.

Kitchen floods due to a soft cloggage. SERVPRO of Highland N. Redlands helps get this home cleaned up.

You are probably wondering what happened here.  This kitchen suffered from a soft blockage. The plumbing backed up and overflowed water throughout the home while the homeowner was out of town. SERVPRO of Highland North Redlands was sent out by the insurance to do a moisture inspection and found damages throughout the entire home. SERVPRO of Highland North Redlands got to work right away. Damaged carpet due to leak in restroom. Thankfully it's easy to remove the carpet for SERVPRO of Highland N. Redlands.

It is very rare nowadays to see set carpet in a restroom. In older homes like this one, it was very normal.  Unfortunately for this homeowner, the carpet became a nightmare after the home suffered from water damages.  The water heater had a sudden burst that flooded the home in several areas. Unfortunately, the carpet absorbed the water like a sponge. To prevent moisture entrapment and mold growth, SERVPRO of Highland/ N. Redlands had to pull the carpet.  The upside about the loss is the customer is now excited to install tile instead of carpet. As she said, even though the carpet feels nice under the feet, it's not worth having in case of a leak. She is excited about having tile in her restroom. It will give it a fresh look.

What is worse than when you flush the toilet and instead of it flushing, it gurgles and rises and overflows. PANIC!! and Ewww! right! This home suffered from a sewage backup. The smell was horrific. Flooded kitchen damaged these kitchen cabinets in the city of Highland.

"When I woke up this morning there was water everywhere!" Mrs. Joyce, the homeowner explained to us when we arrived at the scene.  Her dishwasher gasket seal broke during the night and caused huge water damage throughout her entire home. Thankfully she knew what to do. She said this wasn't her first rodeo.  Mrs. Joyce experienced something similar several years ago unfortunately. SERVPRO of Highland / North Redlands is the first company that came to mind. It's funny how you see these things play out in movies with the soapy water coming out and everyone is laughing. Unfortunately it's not the same in real life. Due to the water damage, Mrs. Joyce's entire kitchen and living areas had to be torn out.  All damaged walls, cabinets, carpets and tile were removed as you can see in the picture above. SERVPRO of Highland / North Redlands quickly went into action. They stored all her belongings in containers to keep them clean during the demolition and reconstruction phase of the job. After the home was cleaned out, we set our industrial strength dehumidifiers and air blowers to insure everything was fully dry before we began reconstruction. This will prevent mold and harmful bacteria from forming. Once everything was cleared and dried, we proceeded with the reconstruction side of the job. Mrs. Joyce is excited to see how her home will turn out.
